Memorial Day has passed, marking the unofficial start of summer. If there’s a type of people who know how to do summer beach days right it’s the Italians. Italians take at least one month’s summer vacation to the beach every year! This tradition is so common that come August, the capital city of Rome seems like a ghost town with only a few people in it’s typically busy streets. As we know some of the finest designers are Italian. Their inspiration comes from their country’s seductive landscape and the style of people caught in the hustle and bustle of the streets. When I think of Italian luxury, I think of the tailoring of Roberto Cavalli, the femininity of Dolce & Gabbana and of course the ever avant garde knit of Missoni. The Italian spirit, swagger, and zest for life certainly migrates with the people to the beaches in summer. I have had the delight of experiencing this spectacle on the beaches of Positano, Capri, Taormina, and Fregene first hand, and Italians do not play it casual on the beach! Here’s how to get the Italian look while soaking up the sun.
Italian Beach Essentials:
- Oversized Designer Sunglasses
- Cute espadrille wedge sandals
- Printed 2 Piece Bathing Suit
- Luxe cover-up or sarong
- Cute tote filled with goodies like iPod, a deck of cards (an Italian Favorite), flip flops (Italians love Havianas) sparkling water, sunscreen etc.
Italians love to soak up the sun all day long on the beach, and treat themselves to a beach side aperitivo (a sort of happy hour) at night. Many Italian beaches have gorgeous ocean side lounges where you can dance, drink a mojito, and watch the Mediterranean sun set amongst friends. Talk about a life of leisure.
